Continúa la controversia en torno a Chick-fil-A, la cadena estadounidense de cómida rápida que hace un par de semanas se declaraba contraria al reconocimiento de las parejas del mismo sexo por boca de su jefe de operaciones, Dan Cathy. A las reacciones contrarias que recogíamos la semana pasada se une ahora la de la concejala neoyorquina Christine Quinn. Pero también surgen defensores de la cadena homófoba. Destaca muy singularmente el apoyo de Sarah Palin.
Dan Cathy, hijo del fundador de Chick-fil-A (y todavía director ejecutivo, S. Truett Cathy) admitía en una entrevista que la oposición al reconocimiento de las parejas del mismo sexo era consustancial a la política de la empresa. Chick-fil-A es una cadena de cómida rápida, cuyo plato estrella es el sandwich de pollo, muy popular en los estados del sur de Estados Unidos, aunque ya se ha expandido por la mayoría de los estados del país. Cuenta con más de 1.600 restaurantes y más de 60.000 empleados. Los Cathy, sus propietarios, son una familia de fe baptista que destaca por sus convicciones evangélicas y sus donaciones a organizaciones abiertamente homófobas, como el Family Research Council, la Marriage and Family Foundation o Exodus International.
A las reacciones contrarias al posicionamiento homófobo de la empresa, algunas de las cuales ya hemos recogido -la del actor Ed Helms, la de Jim Henson Company o la del alcalde de Boston, Thomas Menino- se suma ahora la de Christine Quinn, presidenta del Consejo Municipal de Nueva York, que se ha dirigido a la Universidad de Nueva York (en cuyo campus Chick-fil-A dispone de un establecimiento) para pedir que cancele su relación con la cadena. “Permítame ser clara. No quiero establecimientos en mi ciudad que mantengan puntos de vista discriminatorios. Somos una ciudad que cree que nuestra diversidad es nuestra principal fortaleza y lucharemos contra cualquiera que se oponga a ello”, ha expresado Quinn en un duro comunicado dirigido al presidente de la Universidad. Christine Quinn, abiertamente lesbiana, es a día de hoy la favorita para suceder a Michael Bloomberg al frente de la alcaldía en 2013. Recientemente contrajo matrimonio con su novia, la abogada Kim Catullo, boda que recogimos en su momento.

No podían faltar, sin embargo, los apoyos a Chick-fil-A, procedentes de sectores conservadores. Uno de ellos ha sido, por ejemplo, el del columnista evangélico Jonathan Merritt, sacado estos días del armario por otro bloguero con el que al parecer mantuvo una relación (hoy mismo recogemos la historia en otra entrada). Pero sin duda el apoyo más destacado hasta la fecha ha sido el de la candidata republicana a la vicepresidencia de Estados Unidos en 2009 y musa del ultraconservadurismo estadounidense, Sarah Palin.
La Palin ha mostrado su apoyo a la cadena de comida rápida acudiendo con su marido a un establecimiento de The Woodlands (Texas), donde se ha hecho una foto con un par de bolsas de comida que ha colgado en su Facebook (ver imagen). “Haciendo una pausa en el Chick-fil-A de The Woodlands para apoyar a un gran negocio”, es el texto que la acompañaba.

Michelle Obama Gets Picked Up By Lesbian Wrestler
On a trip to London supporting the U.S. Olympic team, First Lady Michelle Obama made a new friend in lesbian wrestler Elena Sergey Pirozhkov.
During a "Let's Move! London" event heralding athleticism and the Olympic games, Olympic wrestler Pirozhkova playfully picked up Obama at the U.S. Olympic Training Facility at the University of East London on Friday.
Pirozhkov, who is out according to the Washington Blade, will compete in the 63kg/139lb freestyle wrestling tournament on August 8.

Chick-fil-a's anti-LGBT donations have been public knowledge for a while. In 2010, the company donated $2 million dollars to anti-LGBT organizations, including Exodus International, the National Christian Foundation, the Family Research Council, and the Marriage and Family Foundation. Chick-Fil-A President and COO Dan Cathy believes that marriage equality is "inviting God's judgment;" and that our pro-LGBT culture has a "deprived mind." The company also bans same-sex couples from its WinShape Retreat. In light of this statement, a number of individuals and groups have taken action against the company.
Olympic Opening Ceremony Features same sex kiss, and seen for the first time in many countries
Last Friday millions around the globe tuned into the opening ceremony of the Games of the XXX Olympiad and for many this meant seeing a same-sex couple kissing for the first time on television. The festivities, directed by filmmaker Danny Boyle kicked off the world’s greatest sporting event and millions turned on their television to catch the historic kick-off. But this also meant another milestone for many countries as Danny Boyle chose to include a clip of the British soap Brookside featuring a same-sex kiss, making it the first ever kiss by two women on television in many countries around the world.
According to entertainment blog AfterEllen, the kiss between Beth and Meredith of Brookside was the first same-sex kiss seen on television in 76 countries, including Saudi-Arabia. When it first aired in 1994, the clip also marked an important step in British television as it was the first to air pre-watershed, meaning it had been approved for viewing by all ages.
